The World Wide Web turns 20 years old

Saturday is the 20th anniversary of a high-tech invention that changed our lives, the World Wide Web.

The first web site went online on August 6, 1991. The Internet already existed, and British computer scientist Sir Tim Berners-Lee created the World Wide Web as a way to communicate using hypertext.

Internet addresses starting with www are for sites on the World Wide Web. Now, 20 years later, Alexa.com reports the web's most visited sites are Google, Facebook and Youtube.
